TBC is a self-governing congregation
of Baptists from many nations whose faith in Jesus Christ has
drawn them together for worship, fellowship, witnessing and service
in Japan. TBC began with the visions of missionaries for a New
Testament Church to meet the needs of English speaking people
in Tokyo.
1946:
A Baptist Fellowship of military personnel was organized in Japan.
1957 (July):
The Fellowship's members decided to organize an English - speaking
church in Tokyo.
1958 (January 5):
Fifty-Seven members of the Military Baptist Fellowship and missionaries
met in the Keisen Baptist Church in Meguro to organize a New Testament
church. W.H. Jackson, Jr. was called as pastor. this was the first
English-speaking church outisde of the United States to be sponsored
by the Southern Baptist Convention.
1958 (April 13):
A temporary building was dedicated. Dr. Winston Crawley was present.
1959 (February):
Ground was broken for the present structure in Shibuya.
1959 (November 1):
The building was dedicated during a week of ceremonies with ambassadors,
Japanese leaders and dignitaries in attendance. Dr. Bill Souther
directed the choir with the assistance of Dr. Akio Watanabe and
members of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. Milton Dupriest was
called as the new pastor.
1963 (October):
Marion Moorhead, a Southern Baptist Missionary and Professor at
Seinan Jo Gakuin, was called as pastor.
1964 (August):
TBC became the 101st member of the Japan Baptist Convention.
1965 (March 7):
Chofu Baptist Church was organized by 50 members from TBC.
1971 (May):
Roy Edgemon was called as pastor. Lange Hall enlarged and dedicated.
1975 (October):
Marion Moorhead was called as pastor.
1975 (November 9):
Shibuya Baptist Church was organized by the Japanese members of
TBC.
1981:
Richard Horn was called as pastor.
1990:
William Warmth was called as interim pastor.
1993 (March):
Norman Wood was called as pastor.
1999 (June):
Dennis Folds called as pastor.
